I don’t usually write to pass the time, but today, I’ll try something different. The sunlight this afternoon is too beautiful to ignore.

The way the light hits on late summer afternoons is truly something special. It’s one of my favorite things about our little home away from home.

In the summer, there’s so much warmth in the light — all of the richness that was buried by winter comes roaring back to its full glory for a few months before retreating back into hiding. Sometimes, I feel sad that my body doesn’t let me enjoy the heat of the sun, but I’m grateful I can still enjoy its light from the comfort of my air conditioned room.

I often just lie on my bed and observe how it all looks. The way the sunlight careens through the blinds, the way everything’s tinted the most perfect shade of golden. I could observe the sunlight forever and always be surprised by it. I lie there and absorb every last detail of it, so that I don’t forget how it looks when we move.

A smidge of guilt rises up in me, for taking so long doing nothing, for just sitting here and looking at the light. There’s dinner to be made, bills to be paid — but it can wait. I’ve always had trouble slowing down to just live and appreciate what’s in front of me. But I’m grateful I have, as the light begins to turn gray and the sun moves behind clouds, then the horizon. The warmth that was here has waned, and I’m glad I was here to enjoy it. It’s a simple reminder that life is meant to be lived doing the things that make you happy, and that’s always worth the time.
